Privacy Policy
Written in plain English. Because legalese helps no one.
Last updated: January 2025
The Short Version
- • We collect only what we need to make RidePost work
- • We never sell your data—to anyone, ever
- • We don’t store your precise location coordinates
- • You can delete your account and data at any time
- • We’ll notify you if anything important changes
What We Collect
Account Information
When you sign up, we collect your email address. That’s it for required info. You can optionally add a display name and profile photo to help other users recognize you.
Trip Information
When you post a trip, we store the text descriptions you provide—things like "YYJ Airport" or "Downtown Victoria." We never ask for or store GPS coordinates. The level of detail you share is entirely up to you.
Messages
We store messages you send to coordinate rides. This lets you refer back to conversations and helps us investigate if something goes wrong. Messages are visible only to you and the person you’re chatting with.
Ratings
When you rate someone, we store the rating and any comments. Ratings are tied to completed rides and help build trust in the community. Your individual ratings aren’t publicly visible—only your average scores.
What We Don’t Collect
- GPS coordinates—we don’t track where you are or where you’ve been
- Payment information—we don’t process payments, so there’s nothing to store
- Browsing history—we don’t track what you do outside RidePost
- Contact lists—your phone’s contacts stay on your phone
How We Use Your Data
We use the information you provide to:
- • Match you with compatible trips when you search
- • Send notifications about trip matches and messages
- • Calculate and display your rating scores
- • Investigate reports of abuse or policy violations
- • Improve RidePost (using aggregated, anonymized data)
We don’t use your data for advertising, profiling, or anything beyond making the service work.
Who Sees Your Data
Other Users
Your display name, profile photo, trip posts, and rating averages are visible to other users. Your email address is never shared publicly.
Our Team
A small number of team members can access user data when necessary—to fix bugs, respond to support requests, or investigate reports. We don’t casually browse user accounts.
Third Parties
We don’t sell your data. Period. We may share aggregated, anonymized statistics (like "X rides were coordinated this month"), but nothing that identifies you personally.
Legal Requirements
We may disclose information if required by law (like a valid court order). We’ll notify you unless legally prohibited from doing so.
How Long We Keep Your Data
We keep your account data as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we’ll remove your personal data within 30 days.
Some data may be retained longer if required by law or necessary to resolve disputes or enforce our terms. Anonymized, aggregated data may be kept indefinitely.
Your Rights
- → Access—you can request a copy of all data we have about you
- → Correction—you can update your information any time via your profile
- → Deletion—you can delete your account and all associated data
- → Portability—you can export your data in a standard format
To exercise any of these rights, contact us at privacy@ridepost.app.
Cookies
We use essential cookies to keep you logged in and remember your preferences. That’s it.
We don’t use tracking cookies, advertising cookies, or any of the creepy stuff that follows you around the internet. If you block cookies, you’ll need to log in each time you visit, but everything else will work fine.
Security
We take security seriously. All data is encrypted in transit (HTTPS) and at rest. We use industry-standard authentication and regularly review our security practices.
That said, no system is 100% secure. If you discover a vulnerability, please report it to security@ridepost.app.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. If we make significant changes—especially ones that affect how we use your data—we’ll notify you via email and/or a prominent notice on RidePost.
Minor changes (like fixing typos or clarifying language) won’t trigger notifications, but we’ll always update the "Last updated" date at the top.
